Joining Millions Around The World Participating In the Global Generosity Movement
November 30, 2021 – This GivingTuesday, Media Matters Worldwide will inspire generosity by supporting and promoting the work of Students Rising Above and encouraging donors to double their impact up to $10,000 through a Media Matters gift. Students Rising Above (SRA) supports and empowers low-income, first-generation college students to obtain a post-secondary education and secure career-ladder jobs, fueling a diverse and inclusive workforce and thriving economy. For over two decades SRA has worked at the intersection of racial equity, education, and workforce development. Through their student-centered approach, they have learned how to expertly anticipate and identify barriers faced by first-generation, low-income and BIPOC students, in addition to developing and refining a range of strategies and tools to support them. The Students Rising Above team has an extensive track record of identifying and nurturing key educational and professional relationships, and teaching SRA alumni to recognize and foster those relationships in their own communities; on an organizational level SRA has forged relationships and leveraged social capital in the same way they guide their students to do so as individuals.
SRA’s programs and services have been continuously expanded and enhanced to meet the evolving needs of our student community, offering: college access and success advising, healthcare navigation, socioemotional support, financial capability training, career guidance and readiness, and professional development and mentorship.
Media Matters Worldwide is a proud supporter of Students Rising Above. Media Matters Worldwide is an independent media planning, buying, and analytics agency with an audience-first, data-driven, client-centric, and people-first approach. Media Matters Worldwide firmly believes that those who can should. That’s why they’ve created a culture of giving, which includes dedicating staff resources, media, and monetary commitments to three diverse non-profits each year. They also encourage their amazing and generous team to get involved by providing them with two extra PTO days per calendar year specifically for donating time to nonprofits that have personal significance to them.
Media Matters Worldwide has supported Students Rising Above through contributions both financially and through direct service. Media Matters Worldwide employees are encouraged to volunteer, as they do for Students Rising Above’s Career Mentors Program. Career Mentors help students practice interview skills by conducting mock interview sessions with students and sharing interview tips, and also participate in the Winter Career Development Workshop, which focuses on helping college students prepare for the internship application season. Career Mentors also help students develop networking skills through speed networking sessions and informational interviews where students can learn more about different career paths.
This year for GivingTuesday, Media Matters is dedicated to Students Rising Above through incentivized donation matching and spreading awareness. GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and their world. GivingTuesday will kick off the generosity season this year by inspiring people to give back on November 30, 2021, and throughout the year.
The Students Rising Above GivingTuesday initiative is critical to support students in continuing to pursue their education. During 2020, SRA students were tested more than ever, and in 2021 they have shown true resilience and strength in preserving and continuing their education. With the global generosity of GivingTuesday, SRA can continue to support students to and through college and into the workforce.
