We had the opportunity to sit down with new SRA Board member and SRA Career Mentor, Stephen Parlett. Stephen is a former Partner, Portfolio Manager, and Analyst at Citadel, one of the world’s leading alternative asset managers, and currently serves as Senior Advisor at two early stage FinTech companies.

With a passion for financial and data analytics, the transformative power of education, and the deep importance of mentorship, Stephen joined Students Rising Above’s Board of Directors in October, 2020 to support implementing quantifiable scale to the organization through its programs and online platform — the SRA Hub — which leverages technology to reach thousands of first-generation students nationwide.

Stephen has volunteered as a SRA Career Mentor and at the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship as a judge and career coach. He is a guest lecturer at St. Mary’s College and currently coaches the College’s Investment Club and CFA Challenge Team. He holds a B.S. in Finance from California State University, Sacramento.

Read on to hear Stephen’s tips for how to successfully enter the workforce during unprecedented times.

  1. At your core, stay focused and grounded. Try to stay persistent during challenging times.
  2. Outwork and out prepare. Starting at my very first interview, I did everything I could to be particularly professional and prepared. Research, research, research!
  3. Differentiate yourself. It’s all about the little things. For example, I always tried to dress up beyond my boss and peers.
  4. Don’t try to do it alone. Find a trusted mentor to help coach you to identify strategies to differentiate yourself and strengthen your professional and networking skills.
