Richmond, CA – The Northern California College Promise Coalition (NCCPC), in collaboration with founding Steering Committee members Students Rising Above and 10,000 Degrees, and co-hosts Sobrato Philanthropies, Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas, and the California Volunteers is pleased to host the 2024 Joint Convening for Elected Officials and Funders on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA with the theme
Convening for Champions of Higher Education Equity.

“By bringing together a group of leaders and stakeholders with diverse perspectives and lived experiences, we can collaboratively develop innovative strategies to enhance educational equity,” said co-host and NCCPC Steering Committee Member, Students Rising Above Interim CEO Angela Bugayong. As a unifying force since 2019, NCCPC is committed to enhancing college access, success, and career pathways for underserved students in Northern California.

NCCPC’s first Joint Convening unites leaders instrumental in shaping educational policy and economic mobility. This transformative event provides an opportunity to learn from successful efforts that significantly impact students’ lives across Sacramento and the Central Valley. Participants will engage with a diverse network of local, state, and national funders as well as elected officials, employers, postsecondary leaders, and educators.

Together, we will collaborate across city and county lines to address equity in higher education, leveraging data and cutting-edge educational technologies. This member- and invite-only event will feature valuable insights from distinguished leaders, including Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D18), California Deputy Treasurer Stephanie Tom, and Ben Chida, Senior Advisor for Cradle to Career in the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom. Bugayong stated, “The 2024 Joint Convening is vital for driving systemic change in higher education within our communities. Our commitment to supporting first-generation, low-income, and marginalized students is not just a moral imperative, but a critical investment in our state’s economic future. Together, we can champion policies and practices that ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed and thrive in their educational journey.”

In the spirit of NCCPC’s philosophy that “together we go further,” this convening will feature discussions and presentations centered around strategies to create inclusive and equitable cradle-to-career environments, programs, and networks; expand educational access and success opportunities for culturally diverse, traditionally underrepresented populations; and addresses college access, affordability, attainment, and career success for students as a pathway to economic mobility.

NCCPC Executive Director, Meredith Curry Nunez, said, “Investing in the education of our underserved communities is not just an act of equity, but a commitment to our collective future. This convening represents a crucial step towards creating systemic change that empowers every student to achieve their highest potential.”

This event is made possible by the generous support of sponsors Santa Clara University, College Futures Foundation, Crankstart, and Excite Credit Union.
