Edgar Galvez joined Students Rising Above in Summer 2026 as a SOAR College and Career Advisor. As an SRA alumnus, he knows firsthand what it means to have a strong support system helping first-generation students navigate the institutional challenges of college. Born and raised in East Oakland, Edgar is driven to empower, motivate, and support students throughout their educational and professional journeys.
Edgar’s own journey began at UC Davis, where he majored in Sociology and Psychology. After graduating, he joined UC Berkeley’s Destination College Advising Corps and Early Academic Outreach Program, returning to his alma mater, Oakland High School, as a college advisor. Guiding students who once walked the same halls he did deepened his commitment to education and led him to pursue a master’s degree in Chicano/a Studies at San Jose State University.
Outside of work, Edgar enjoys creating music and poetry, and cultivating spaces for creative expression.
