SRA’s College2Careers Hub Reaches 10,000 Students!






Online Community Announces Plans To Help More Students in 2017


SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 18, 2017Students Rising Above, (SRA) one of the nation’s most successful college completion and workforce entry programs, today announced that more than 10,000 students are now using SRA College2Careers Hub, an online community that helps low-income, first-generation students manage college and launch their careers.


Since the Hub was launched in September 2014, 45 Bay Area high schools, nonprofits and after school programs have partnered with SRA to offer college advising and help students navigate the college experience. In California public high schools today, there is about one college counselor for every 1,000 students.


In addition to achieving this key milestone, SRA today also announced that it plans to expand beyond its current focus on high school students and offer its first-of-its kind solution to students at four-year and two-year colleges in 2017.


“Students Rising Above is firm in its conviction that all children deserve the opportunity to achieve prosperity through education and hard work, irrespective of their socioeconomic status,” said SRA Executive Director Lynne Martin. “Without equal opportunity, we have two Americas—one for people who are positioned to succeed in the modern economy, and one for people who will fail. The Hub is a real opportunity for low-income, first-generation students to realize the benefit of a college education and make a better life for themselves, their families and their communities.”


SRA’s Hub partners include schools in San Francisco, San Jose, Los Altos, Oakland, Emeryville, Alameda, Richmond, Berkeley, Pinole, Crockett, Windsor. SRA plans to roll out the Hub nationally.


The Hub is a 24×7 resource that complements school districts and helps students graduate from college and break the cycle of poverty. The Hub supports school staff with a pre-made 9th-12th grade curriculum and monthly lesson plans that align with Hub resources.


The Hub’s growth is due to its unique set of student services, which include the following:

  • One-to-one advising from a professionally trained online advisor. Students often get real-time answers to questions, but responses no later than 24 hours.
  • An extensive resource center that answers virtually every question about college, from how to complete a financial aid form to dealing with a difficult roommate.
  • Automated templates for creating letters of recommendation, a personal budget, as well as templates for resumes, cover letters and thank you letters.
  • An online-community that enables students to chat with other students and exchange ideas.


“Since launching the Hub, SRA has learned that technology is only part of the equation in working with low-income, first generation students,” Martin said. “Students respond when they have a personal relationship with their Hub advisor. The engagement with a real person who understands them and cares about their future makes all the difference. Our one-to-one counseling is a key reason more students and educators are partnering with us.”
